Philadelphia May Decriminalize Possession Of Marijuana

Philadelphia Is Voting On Decriminalizing Marijuana

It will be today, when Philadelphia's City Council, will vote on whether or not they should decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana in their city and at Zip 420, we hope that they vote in favor of this new bill.

Councilman Jim Kenney, sponsored this ordinance and it would make the possession of up to one ounce of cannabis a civil penalty.  This means that if a police office finds a person carrying a smaller amount of marijuana than the one mentioned above, they would only charge them a $25 fine and if it is paid, the person would not get the infraction on their record.

At the moment, police officers are meant to arrest people with these amounts of marijuana and they could spend some time in jail, which is certainly a very harsh penalty, for something that should be legal and benefits more than it harms our societies.

According to Councilman Kenney, if this ordinance is approved, they would be able to reduce the amount of work police officers focus on this and the city of Philadelphia, would also save more than $3 millions on jail expenses and more.

The meeting about this, should be taking place around 10 AM Philadelphia time today, so the news about this should not be long.
